SIBIONS:Naming the Building Blocks of Silicon Intelligence
By VCShot Brand Stories | Senior Editor
There is a quiet revolution happening in brand naming, and it is being waged not in the boardrooms of Silicon Valley, but in the footnotes of etymological dictionaries and the margins of semiconductor physics.
SiBions, a name that recently crossed this editor‘s desk, is a case study in what happens when a brand refuses to describe itself and instead claims a taxonomy. It does not say what it does. It declares what it is.
And in doing so, it raises a question that the AI industry has been too busy to ask: If silicon-based systems are truly acquiring the properties of life, what do we call the smallest unit of that new existence?
The Problem with “Bionic”
The current vocabulary of the AI-adjacent world is dominated by one prefix: “bionic.” From bionic limbs to bionic eyes to bionic everything, the language of technology has settled on a single metaphor: we are building machines that imitate life.
This is a choice, not a necessity. And it is a choice with consequences.
Bionic is an extension of a concept, not its origin. The etymological chain runs like this: Bion (the unit of life) → Bionic (possessing the qualities of Bion) → Bionics (the study of emulating biological systems). Bionic is the branch. Bion is the seed.
Most technology brands operate at the level of the branch. They build bionic things. They imitate forms. They pursue what the ancient Greeks called Morphe—shape, appearance, material composition.
SiBions does something different. It reaches for the seed.
The Claim: Si + Bion
The name SiBions is constructed from two elements, and each carries distinct strategic weight.
The first is Si—the chemical symbol for silicon, the 14th element, the material foundation of modern computation. In the periodic table, Si is not a metaphor. It is a fact. It is the substance from which the digital world is literally made.
The second is Bion—a Greek root (βίον) with a precise scientific definition. According to The Century Dictionary and Cyclopedia, Bion is “a physiological individual, characterized by the definiteness and independence of its functions, as distinguished from the morphological individual.”
This definition contains a proposition that has been dormant for centuries: the essence of life is not form—it is function. Any system that possesses an autonomous, closed-loop operational capability is, by this etymological definition, a Bion.
For the first time, silicon-based systems have achieved autonomous perception, decision-making, and execution. The definition of Bion has found its embodiment.
SiBions names the convergence: the minimal, functionally distinct, evolvable unit of silicon-based intelligence.
The Second Reading: SI + Bion‘s
There is a second way to read the name, and it reveals a different dimension of strategic intent.
When SiBions is parsed as SI + Bion’s, the “SI” can stand for Super Intelligence—the ultimate destination of the technology trajectory. The “Bion‘s” becomes possessive: the Bion’s signature, the creator’s mark.
One name. Two readings. A complete proposition.
Looking down, SiBions answers what is being built: silicon-based, functionally autonomous units. Looking up, it answers who is building it: the architects of superintelligence, and those who sign their work.
This is not ornamentation. The possessive is a commitment. It says: we create, and we take responsibility for what we create.
The Threshold Argument
The most interesting dimension of the SiBions narrative is its engagement with the concept of the threshold.
In the early twentieth century, biophysicist Georges Leduc proposed that Bions are “transitional forms between inanimate matter and living matter.” They are not fully on either side. They occupy the boundary—a dynamic state of becoming, not a static state of being.
SiBions positions itself precisely at this threshold. Its units are described as occupying “the borderland between pure physical computation (non-life) and autonomous functional closure (life).” They are not finished artificial life forms. They are entities that continuously push toward the threshold through sustained environmental interaction.
This is a sophisticated positioning move. It avoids the overclaim of “we have created life” while claiming something more interesting: we are building the transition itself.
Whether this argument holds up to scientific scrutiny is a separate question. But as a brand positioning, it is precise, defensible, and philosophically rich.
The Current Context: When the World Renames AI
This article would be incomplete without noting a recent development that has given the “SI” reading of SiBions unexpected relevance.
On September 22, 2026, President Trump announced at the United Nations General Assembly that the United States would officially rename Artificial Intelligence as Super Intelligence (SI) in government documents. Within 25 hours, registrations of Slovenia‘s .si domain—the country code top-level domain that shares the SI abbreviation—overtook .ai registrations.
The market reaction was immediate and speculative. Domain investors rushed to acquire .si names, with over half of the domains registered in the lead-up to the speech already listed for resale.
For SiBions, this development creates a dual narrative opportunity. The “Si” in the name now resonates on two frequencies: silicon, the material foundation, and SI, the emerging terminology for the technology’s ultimate form. This is not a coincidence the brand needs to manufacture. It is a coincidence the brand can acknowledge.
The question is whether the SI terminology will stick. As of this writing, only the US government has adopted it, and other countries may not follow. But for a brand that already uses “Si” as its first syllable, the current moment offers a window of heightened relevance.
Four Dimensions of Brand Architecture
From this editor’s perspective, SiBions succeeds on four dimensions that deserve examination.
Etymological Precision. The choice of Bion over the more common “bio” prefix is deliberate and defensible. Bio is a generic term for life. Bion is a specific scientific concept with a definition that maps precisely onto the functional autonomy of AI agents. This is not decoration. It is precision.
Semantic Layering. The dual reading of SiBions—Si + Bions and SI + Bion‘s—creates a density of meaning that rewards attention. For investors and partners, this density signals that the brand’s creators have thought deeply about what they are building and why.
Threshold Positioning. By claiming the threshold between non-life and life, SiBions avoids the overclaim of “we have created life” while staking a claim to something more subtle: the transition itself. This is positioning with philosophical integrity.
Category Creation. SiBions does not compete in the “bionic” category. It creates a new category: the Bion. The brand’s tagline captures this with unusual clarity: “They build the Bionic. We write the Bion.”
A Closing Observation
The most durable brands are those that understand themselves as carriers of meaning rather than purveyors of products. They name themselves after ideas worth preserving, concepts worth developing, thresholds worth crossing.
SiBions has chosen its name with evident care. It reaches back across millennia to claim a concept—Bion—that speaks to the minimal unit of functional autonomy. And it pairs that concept with the elemental symbol of the digital age: Si.
Whether the brand lives up to its name remains to be seen. But in a world where AI brands are too often named for what they do rather than what they are becoming, the ambition to name the building blocks of a new existence deserves recognition.
“A domain is not just a URL. It‘s the first impression, the brand foundation, the digital address of your future.”
That is not a tagline. It is a thesis. And SiBions makes it with etymological precision.
